Ranking Methodology

A transparent framework measuring global academic web presence, digital research impact, and open knowledge accessibility.

Evaluation Philosophy

The Webometrics World ranking system evaluates higher education institutions based on their performance, authority, and output across web platforms. Our objective is to incentivize institutions to publish high-quality academic knowledge and make research fully accessible worldwide.

Core Ranking Indicators

Our methodology combines four main quantitative web metrics to compute the global performance index of each university:

Visibility (Impact) 50%

Measures the number of external networks linking to the university's official web domain. It reflects the institution's prestige, quality of content, and global academic recognition.

Transparency (Openness) 30%

Assesses the volume of highly cited citations and research papers published in open repositories and profile databases, highlighting institutional commitment to open access.

Excellence (Excellence) 10%

Evaluates the number of scientific papers among the top 10% most cited in their respective discipline over a multi-year period.

Web Presence 10%

Analyzes the overall volume of web pages indexed under the university's main domain, including main subdomains and official academic portals.

Data Sources & Standardization

Data is compiled using specialized web analytics, academic indexing platforms, and search engine metrics. Institutional domains are carefully normalized to ensure fair evaluation, avoiding domain aliases or legacy subdomains.
